Setting the Stage in Texas

Not much was expected from Rich Peverley coming into Milwaukee as an undrafted free agent in 2005, which might make his story one of the best in hockey. Peverley is third in assists, fourth in points and eighth in goals in the team’s AHL history. He is also one of three Admirals to have scored 30 goals in a season since the team’s transition to the AHL. Coming into a team with the likes of Darren Haydar, Kevin Klein, Sheldon Brookbank, Shea Weber and Vern Fiddler would be intimidating for most undrafted rookies, but Peverley made a name for himself finishing third in assists and fifth in points despite not playing in 17 games in the 2005-2006 season. During this season he played on a line with future NHL players Jordin Tootoo and Scottie Upshall. Peverley was also a key contributor in the teams run to the Calder Cup Final as he put up 11 points in the playoffs, ranking fifth on the team. “He came up and immediately made an impact, you could tell the scouts must have saw something in him because he was a good player right away and he was quick and had quick hands and could shoot the puck," said teammate Shea Weber. "It didn’t take him long to keep developing and becoming a great NHL player.”The term “Sophomore Slump” was a foreign one to Peverley as he followed up his rookie year by leading the team with 68 points due in large part to his ability to find open teammates. This was his highest single season point total as an Admiral. His +9 rating was also the highest on the team by five points. His great showing during the Admirals 2006-2007 campaign grabbed the attention of the Nashville Predators as they signed him to a NHL deal in the winter of ‘07. By the end of the season Peverley had 13 NHL games under his belt. Peverley split the 2007-2008 season between the Predators and Admirals, playing 45 games in Milwaukee and 33 in Nashville, including all six playoff games against the Detroit Red Wings. Despite playing in a little over half of the AHL season Peverley still racked up 54 points for the Admirals finishing third on the team. Since making it to the NHL Peverley has not looked back, playing in eight straight seasons on a NHL roster. In 2008 Peverley left the Nashville system when he was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Thrashers. In his first 39 games in Atlanta he put up 35 points and earned himself a two-year contract extension. Altogether Peverley played 180 games and totaled 124 points with the Thrashers. Peverley was traded to the Boston Bruins in 2011, where he still plays today. While playing for Boston he was a part of the team that won the Stanley Cup, joining an elite class of only 15 former Admirals to have done so. Peverley has played 344 NHL games, tallied 197 points and won a Stanley Cup. Not bad for an undrafted free agent coming into Milwaukee eight years ago. |
