“Yak was the best playmaker I have ever played with, I had my best seasons with him," said former Admirals teammate Danny Lecours. "We had an awesome line with him at center and Yves and I on the wings. He was a great playmaker, with great vision and reach.” Yakiwchuk came to Milwaukee in 1981 at the age of 22 and quickly became a household name as he put up 75 points in just 72 games. He became known for his passing ability as he tallied 57 assists and also added 18 goals. Yakiwchuk’s second season is when he came into his own as he set, and still holds, the single-season record for most points (138) by an Admiral. His 138 points lead the IHL that season which won him the Leo Lamoureux Memorial Trophy. On his way to 138 points he racked up an astonishing 100 assists, which has never been done by another Admiral before, or since. Along with his pile of assists he tacked on 38 goals, his most in a single season as in Milwaukee His playmaking ability that season was a significant factor in the team making it to the IHL Finals, the Ads only championship round appearance in their time in the I. The 1983-84 season resulted with Yakiwchuk joining an exclusive club as he became one of two Admirals to record 100 points in consecutive seasons as he put up 104 points. Yakiwchuk left the Admirals organization for the 1984-85 season to play with IHL rival Kalamazoo, but returned to Milwaukee in 1985. Although he may have been gone for a season he arrived the way he left as he put up another season with over 100 points, as he posted 101 with 33 goals and 68 assists. Yakiwchuk played his final season in Milwaukee in 1986-87, tallying 63 points. His 36 assists upped his Admirals total to 330, comfortably placing him second all-time in team history in helpers. He also notched 27 goals as well that final year moving his Admirals total to 151 which put him fourth all-time. These totals gave him 481 points in his career in Milwaukee which ranks third in team history. Yakiwchuk’s aggressive play was a major contributor to his high point total, but it also landed him in the penalty box for 915 minutes which ranks fourth all-time in Admirals history. After his days in Milwaukee Yakiwchuk played another season with Kalamazoo and then retired from hockey in 1987. |
