Setting the Stage in Texas

Greg Zanon is an example of hard work playing off. With a tireless work ethic Zanon went from free agent signee with the Admirals in 2004 to six-year NHL veteran today. The Burnaby, BC native spent the four years with Milwaukee. Zanon was a rookie member of the Admirals squad when they defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the Calder Cup in 2004. He had an astounding plus/minus coming in at +30, which is the second highest +/- total for an Admiral since the team joined the AHL in 2001. “Greg was one of those guys that he leads you knew exactly where he was and where everyone else was on the ice because his voice travelled extremely well and he wasn’t afraid to use it," said former Admirals Darren Haydar. "He played extremely hard, he blocked shots, and I think that’s what translated his game into the NHL is just being able to play simple and play defensive and block those shots that some guys aren’t willing to get in front of.” Zanon made his money in the defensive zone, he quickly gained a reputation as one of the best penalty killers and shot blockers in the league. Admirals fans will no doubt remember him for his part in killing a five-on-three penalty without a stick during an intense game six versus Cincinnati in the first round of the playoffs in 2004. Zanon’s work ethic, team-first attitude, and vocal guidance earned him the role as the team captain during the 2005-2006 season and he helped the squad to a return visit to the Calder Cup Finals. While known more for his work in the defensive zone, Zanon also contributed on the scoresheet as well. In his Admirals career he posted 14 goals and 58 assists for 72 points and was third among team blueliners in 2005-06 in scoring with 35 points (8g-27a). In total he played in 215 games in a Milwaukee sweater and accumulated an eye-popping +52 rating. Zanon currently skates for the Colorado Avalanche and has played in over 450 career NHL contests. |
