Memorial Day, which was first called Decoration Day, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars.
For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date General John A. Logan, a leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.
Moving on...
There is a petition which you can find online to get L.A. Kings announcers Bob Miller and Jim Fox to broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals. Of course, NBC will have the call and we'll hear the great Mike Emrick.
I do think, however, it would be nice for the markets involved to hear their own guys do the games. Especially in a market where the broadcasters are as revered as Miller and Fox.
Speaking of Miller...it was a huge honor to visit with him on Milwaukee Admirals Center Ice last Monday. Miller started his career at channel 6 here in Milwaukee before moving to Madison and then to Los Angeles.
Our next Center Ice show is June 25 at 6pm on Sportsradio 1250, WSSP.
