Before our last game we were leading the league on the power play, running at a 38 percent conversion rate and currently we are second in the league 26.9 percent. The power-play will be constantly changing throughout the season because of personel changes, oppoenent's PK, or building.
With the roster changes due to call-ups or injuries we need to make sure that everyone understands all of the responsibilities on the power-play, especially the importance of good net presence. We need to be sure we take away the goalie’s eyes. The goalies in this league are too good. If they can see the puck they’re going to stop a majority of the shots. Saturday night we let the goalie see pretty much every shot. On most of the shots coming in we didn’t have a strong enough presence in front of the net so we made it too easy on their goalie that particular night.
Our execution wasn’t great at times. We bobbled some passes. Sometimes we were out of position. It’s always a work in progress. You’re going to have some nights that just don’t go well for you. The key is next game we make the necessary adjustments and be sure our execution is good. We have to be sure to come out ready to make it happen, and outwork the penalty killers.
Obviously, we are going to study the opposing teams’ power play, penalty kills, systems and personnel. We also make some adjustments to our system to give ourselves the best chance to win. Our main philosophy is to focus on our effort and how we come out and execute.
In the early part of the season, the progression of the team is a building process. I like how our guys have been competing every night and the effort they put forth. I don’t think the first Abbotsford game was our best performance. But the Chicago game was a solid outing for us. And I thought we played strong and very smart in our second trip down to Peoria. Those would be some bright spots for us so far. The main thing at this point is that every time we come to the rink both as players and as a coaching staff, we get better every time. The expectations are high here and our attitude and work ethic has been very good.
