Ellison, Rinne Propel Admirals Over Wolves

Oct 28, 2007

Click to hear Aaron Sim's post-game report! Milwaukee, WI– Milwaukee Admirals goaltender Pekka Rinne stopped all 28 shots thrown his way and Matt Ellison scored the game-winning goal 2:49 into overtime as the Admirals knocked off the Chicago Wolves 1-0 at the Bradley Center Saturday night.

While neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation, there was no shortage of chances for both teams. In the first period the Ads outshot the Wolves 10-9, but it was Chicago who would have the best chances, including a pair of clean breakaways. However, Rinne denied all comers to keep the game scoreless.

Chicago would control play in the second period and had a golden opportunity when Janne Niskala and Cody Franson were called for separate tripping penalties just 48 seconds apart giving the Wolves a two-man advantage for 1:12. The Ads would have to kill just over 50 seconds of the five-on-three before Chicago’s Joel Kwiatkowski was called for hooking, making the Milwaukee penalty killing unit’s job much more manageable. The Wolves would end up outshooting the Admirals 13-7, but the game remained scoreless. The third period saw the two squads play a bit more conservative, but this time it was the Admirals who had the golden chance when Antti Pihlstrom was awarded a penalty shot at the 11:11 mark of the third. However, his attempt was thwarted by Chicago netminder Fred Brathwaite and the game eventual went into overtime.

Ellison was finally able to break the stalemate in the OT session as he created a turnover at the Chicago blueline and then fed Jason Guerriero on his left, as the two came in on the Chicago goal two-on-one. Guerriero held the puck just long enough to make Brathwaite commit before feathering a pass back to Ellison who had an open net to finish the game.

The goal was Ellison’s fourth on the year, tying him for the team lead, while the Admirals PK unit was a perfect 4-for-4 on the night to help key the Admirals victory.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Ads and it was also their second consecutive shutout. Maxime Daigneault fired a 27-save shutout in the team’s 2-0 win in Quad City Friday night. Their last loss came in OT on October 13th against the Wolves.

The Admirals travel to Iowa Tuesday night before returning to the Bradley Center next Friday for a 7:00 pm match-up versus the Manitoba Moose.
