Admirals Get Short in Win
Oct 19, 2007
After the Stars’ Tim Wandell scored 2:13 into the contest, the Admirals controlled play for the remainder of the first period as they outshot Iowa 13-6 in the stanza. Jason Guerriero would tie the score at one for Milwaukee at the 11:48 mark of the first when he pounced on the rebound of a Matt Ellison shot and stuffed it past Iowa goaltender Steve Silverthorn.
Milwaukee would break the 1-1 stalemate with a pair of second period, shorthanded goals barely over two minutes apart. The first one came when Andreas Thuresson carried the puck into the Iowa zone on a two-on-one rush and fired a wrister that clanged off the post and in at 9:33. The goal was Thuresson’s first as an Admiral.
After Nolan Yonkman took an interference penalty, putting the Stars on the power-play, Alexander Sulzer would get his first marker of the season at the 11:44 mark with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that made it through traffic and into the net. Rich Peverley and Mark Matheson picked up the assists on the play. Iowa would make it interesting by pulling within one at 3-2 just 37 seconds into the third period on a Janos Vas tally. But Antti Pihlstrom’s second goal in as many games at the 8:01 mark of the period gave the Admirals another two-goal cushion and put an end to the night’s scoring.
Pekka Rinne finished the night with 24 saves on 26 Iowa shots to earn his second win of the season. It was also the third consecutive game that the Finnish netminder had allowed just two goals. Sulzer paced the Admirals offense with two points (1g-1a) and was also +2, while Peverley chipped in with a pair of assists on the night.
This was the first time that the Admirals had tallied two shorties in one game since doing it against the San Antonio Rampage on February 15th, 2006 in a 5-2 win.
The Admirals and Stars finish off their home-and-home set with a 5:05 matinee at the Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday. Milwaukee’s next home contest will be on Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 pm against the Quad City Flames. Deanna Favre will be at the game to sign copies of her new book and to help raise money for the Deanna Favre HOPE Foundation.
