O'Reilly Leads Admirals Eruption
Oct 24, 2007
Ironically it was Quad City who controlled play for the first 20 minutes, outshooting the Admirals 14-3 in the first period. But it was the Ads who would get on the board first, thanks to a highlight reel goal by O'Reilly. Playing shorthanded, Josh Langfeld carried the puck out of the Admirals zone and passed to O'Reilly who brought the puck over the Quad City blueline. The crafty forward briefly lost control of the puck, prompting him to send a pass to Langfeld between his legs. Langfeld held the puck just long enough to freeze Quad City goalie Curtis McElhinney and then fed it back to O'Reilly who had a wide open net.
That goal seemed to wake the Admirals out of their funk and they scored early and often in the second stanza. Rich Peverley got things going when he took a pretty cross ice pass from O’Reilly during a five-on-three power play and beat McElhinney at the 2:56 mark of the period. Richard Stehlik then picked up his first goal as an Admiral 4:25 in to the second when his shot deflected off of a Quad City defenseman and into the net for a 3-0 lead. Matt Ellison and Mike Santorelli followed with markers just 25 seconds apart before Janne Niskala lit the lamp on a pair of power-play tallies to run the Admirals lead to 7-0. O’Reilly would notch his second shortie of the night at 15:51 of the third to finish the Admirals scoring.
Only a Kris Chucko power-play goal with under 90 seconds to play prevented Admirals backstop Pekka Rinne from registering his first shutout of the season. The Finnish goalie ended the night with 36 saves to earn his third consecutive win and fourth overall.
O’Reilly had three points on the night to pace an Admirals offense that saw 13 different players find the score sheet. Niskala had his two goals and was +2, while fellow d-man Cody Franson recorded a pair of helpers.
The Admirals and Flames will finish the back end of their home-and-home series on Friday night in Quad City. The Ads then return home to the Bradley Center for a 7:30 pm contest against the Chicago Wolves on Saturday night.
