Admirals Fly by Aeros
Nov 8, 2007
Milwaukee, WI—John Vigilante broke a 1-1 tie 49 seconds into the third period and Pekka Rinne stopped 24 shots to lead the Milwaukee Admirals to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Aeros Thursday night at the Bradley Center. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Admirals and gave them their fifth win in six tries on home ice.The Aeros controlled play during the first period and were rewarded with a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Peter Olvecky lit the lamp at the 10:43 mark of the first stanza off assists from Clayton Stoner and Adrian Foster. Mike Santorelli and Alexander Sulzer took back-to-back penalties and the Admirals were just 15 seconds away from killing off all four minutes before Olvecky beat Rinne high to the glove side for the game’s first marker.
The Admirals would tie the score in the second period when Oliver Setzinger notched his first goal of the year on what was an unusual play. With Milwaukee on the power play, the Aeros dumped the puck into the Admirals zone where Rinne handled the puck and attempted to fire an outlet pass to Sulzer at center ice. The pass was off the mark, though, and it appeared to be headed for an icing call as the puck sailed past the goal line untouched. However, the icing was waived off and when Houston defenseman Eric Reitz tried to send a pass from behind the net Setzinger picked off and converted with a quick wrister.
Vigilante broke the tie just 49 seconds into the third period with his second goal of the year on assists from Sulzer and Cal O’Reilly. On a delayed penalty O’Reilly carried the puck behind the Houston net and found a crashing Sulzer who froze Aero’s goaltender Nolan Schaefer and then fired a pass to Vigilante on the left post and he tapped it in.Rinne and the Admirals defense held strong the rest of the way and O’Reilly finished off the scoring with an empty-netter at the 19:32 mark
O’Reilly (1g-1a) was the lone Admiral to record a multi-point game, while Rinne earned his sixth win of the season on the night. Schaefer swatted away 24 of 26 shots for the Aeros, but still suffered the loss.
