Admirals Can't Solves Howard, Griffins
Dec 2, 2007
The first period saw both teams battling for possession and racking up a collective six penalties. Despite the power play opportunities, neither offense was able to penetrate the nets with Rinne and Howard resembling brick walls.
As with the first, the second period became a battle between Rinne and Howard. Rinne foiled all eight of Grand Rapids’ attempts to score, while Howard denied the Admirals ten times during the period. The Admirals penalty killing unit was on point, shutting down both of the Griffins’ power play chances. The Admirals and Griffins entered the third period blood-thirsty and ready to score. Both teams played far more aggressively than they did during the first 40 minutes of play and minor skirmishes broke out at both ends of the ice. While Griffins goaltender Howard remained unbeatable, Admirals goaltender Rinne surrendered the lone goal of the game at the 17:57 mark of the third.
Grand Rapids defenseman Jonathan Ericsson took possession of the puck in the Griffins’ zone and completed a pass down the ice to center Evan McGrath. McGrath centered the puck from the corner and found winger Randall Gelech who went top shelf beating Rinne. The game-winner was Gelech’s fourth goal of the season.
The game was the second time this season that Rinne gave up just one tally, but still suffered the loss. Mike Santorelli and Antti Pihlstrom led the Admirals with four shots apiece.
The Admirals hit the road next weekend for games with Toronto and Hamilton.
