Stars Streak by Admirals
Dec 11, 2007
Iowa took an early lead at the 1:19 mark of the first after Junior Lessard fired the puck on net, and the rebound went right to Marty Sertich in the high slot who beat Milwaukee goaltender Maxime Daigneault. The Admirals retaliated soon after, however, beating Iowa goalie Tobias Stephan at 5:01 of the first. Jason Guerriero recovered the puck near the left circle in the Iowa zone and centered to Cal O’Reilly. Cruising in from the right corner, winger Vigilante found O’Reilly’s pass and went five-hole to beat Stephan and knot the score at one.
The two goals would be the only markers for each team as Stephan and Daigneault denied the remainder of the shots.
Both teams entered the second period craving the go-ahead goal, but it was Iowa who got it at the 6:44 mark of the period. Daigneault bobbled the puck after a shot from Janos Vas, dropping it behind him just in front of the goal line. With Daigneault’s back to the puck, right wing Marius Holtet tipped it in to give the Stars a 2-1 lead. The Admirals were able to hold the Stars off the board for the remainder of the period in spite of two Iowa power-play opportunities.
Despite the many close calls in front of both team’s nets, the score was unchanged for almost half of the third period. Iowa again had reason to celebrate at Milwaukee’s expense as Holtet notched his second goal of the night at the 9:12 mark. Off a pass from Perttu Lindgren, defenseman Jussi Timonen found Holtet just inside Milwaukee’s blue line and Holtet’s fired a long slapshot that beat Daigneault to give the Stars an insurance tally.
The Ads continued to fight viciously for the duration of the third period with the puck spending most of its time dancing in front of Iowa’s netminder. Even after a late penalty against Vigilante, Milwaukee forced the Stars to play defensively on their own power play. Unfortunately for the Admirals they were not able to crack Stephan and Lessard iced the game for Iowa with an empty netter with 20 seconds to play.
Tonight’s game marked Daigneault’s fourth start as an Admiral, and his second loss. O’Reilly’s assist in the first period secured his spot as Milwaukee’s leading point-scorer while Vigilante rippled the mesh for the sixth time this season.
