Admirals Can't Complete Comback Over Wolves
Dec 28, 2007
Milwaukee, WI—Chicago Wolves defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski scored a natural hat trick in the second period to lead the Wolves to a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Friday night at the Bradley Center. The loss was the third straight for Milwaukee, who will travel to Grand Rapids to take on the Griffins Saturday night.
The Admirals jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Mike Santorelli picked up his eighth goal of the season at the 11:40 mark of the first. Milwaukee center Cal O'Reilly sent a pass from the corner to Josh Langfeld in the near slot. Chicago netminder Ondrej Pavelec made the save on Langfeld's chance, but Santorelli pounced on the rebound and flipped the puck over Pavelec.
Just when it looked as the score would stay 1-0 Milwaukee going into the first intermission, the Wolves Jordan LaVallee got behind the Admirals defense and beat Pekka Rinne to knot the score at one after 20 minutes of play.
The Ads went back up a goal at 2-1 on a Rich Peverley power-play goal at 1:59 of the second period before Kwiatkowski's scored goals at 7:40, 10:12, and 16:40 of stanza. All of his goals came on the power-play and all were assisted by former Admirals Darren Haydar.
The Admirals would pull within one at 4-3 less then five minutes into the third period when Josh Langfeld gathered the loose rebound of a Janne Niskala puck and beat Pavelec’s stacked pads. Niskala and O’Reilly assisted on the goal, Langfeld fifth marker of the season.A scrum in front of the Ads net at the 8:19 mark of the third produced six penalties between the two clubs and put the Admirals on the power-play, but despite multiple chances they couldn’t cash in, thanks in apart to a magnificent glove save by Pavelec on a point-blank backhand by Niskala.
Milwaukee had another opportunity to even the score when the Wolves Brian Fahey was whistled for cross-checking with 51 seconds left in the game and Rinne pulled in favor of an extra attacker. However, the Admirals were unable to find the equalizer during the six-on-four time and Chicago came away with the win.
Langfeld paced the Milwaukee offense with a goal and an assist, while O’Reilly posted two assists and now has points in nine of his last ten games.
The Admirals penalty kill unit, which came into the game with an AHL-best 87.2 % kill rate, was only 4 of 7 on the PK on the night. It was just the second time in the last 14 games they have surrendered more than one power-play goal.
The Admirals hit the road for a 6:00 pm game versus Grand Rapids tomorrow night at the Van Andel Arena. Their next home game will be next Saturday, January 5th when they have a rematch with the Wolves at 8:00 pm at the BC. The game will follow a 5:45 pm concert by The Goo Goo Dolls.
