Ads Snap Rivermen Streak
Jan 20, 2008
Milwaukee, WI – The Peoria Rivermen’s nine-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt Sunday afternoon at the Bradley Center as the Milwaukee Admirals emerged the victors by a score of 5-4. Cal O’Reilly notched his third game-winning goal of the season and Andreas Thuresson added a goal and an assist to lead the Admirals offense.
The lone goal of the first period came from Admirals left wing Ryan Maki who scored his first professional tally at 13:42. Maki recovered the puck just in front of the crease and went to the five-hole to beat Peoria goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu.
Peoria entered the second frame determined to match the Ads, but Milwaukee’s defense was on point and kept the Rivermen off the board for almost half the period. At 8:09, Rivermen defenseman Steve Wagner found a pass at the top of crease and beat Admirals netminder Pekka Rinne.
The Admirals answered only 31 seconds later as Andreas Thuresson lit the lamp with the help of Alexander Sulzer and Kelsey Wilson. At the 11:04 mark, Jason Guerriero gave the Admirals a two-goal lead he recovered a loose puck in front of Peoria’s goal and beat Beckford-Tseu. Peoria fired back yet again at the 13:13 mark as Nicholas Drazenovic tipped the puck in after a scramble in front of Milwaukee’s net. Determined to regain a two goal lead, Milwaukee fought to the very end of the period as Matt Ellison got a shot off from the right face off circle in Peoria’s zone that found its way to the back of the net at the 19:55 mark.
The Rivermen got the best of the Ads’ defense twice in the third, with Jeff Woywitka rippling the mesh at 12:41 and Charles Linglet notching his 16th goal of the season at 16:08.
With under 4 minutes to play and the score tied, both teams seemed to brace themselves for what seemed to be an inevitable overtime. But O’Reilly had other ideas and beat Beckfor-Tseu with a wrister to the stick side, at the 17:13 mark of the third to make it 5-4 Admirals.
This afternoon’s game marked the seventh time this season that Cal O’Reilly notched two points with his goal and assist. Also achieving multiple point games were Kelsey Wilson and Bryan Schmidt, both with two assists, in addition to Thuresson.
