Admirals Swim by Rivermen
Feb 10, 2008
Milwaukee, WI – The Milwaukee Admirals snapped their four-game losing streak Sunday afternoon at the Bradley Center as they edged by the Peoria Rivermen 3-2. Cody Franson notched his second game-winning goal of the season while Cal O’Reilly added two assists to the tally.
Defensive units dominated the first 20 minutes of play. Both Peoria and Milwaukee found their offensive lines shut down as they managed only 8 and 6 shots on goal respectively. Netminders Pekka Rinne and Marek Schwarz were on top of their games as the final whistle blew with both teams failing to get on the board.
The Admirals returned seemingly determined not to repeat the first period and waited only 51 seconds to strike, despite being down a man as Matt Ellison sat in the box for hooking. O’Reilly stole the puck in the Rivermen zone and fed left wing John Vigilante fired a wrist shot that rippled the mesh giving the Ads the early lead in the second. Only two minutes later, Milwaukee got the best of the Peoria defense as a pass from O’Reilly found Mike Santorelli cruising in front of the net. Santorelli easily slipped the puck past Schwarz potting his 15th goal of the season at the 3:06 mark.
The Rivermen would not go quietly, however, and retaliated at 11:41 when winger Chris Porter scored an unassisted goal. Their celebration was cut short as they were forced to kill off two penalties simultaneously. Milwaukee capitalized, and Franson lit the lamp off a shot from the left face-off circle with 3:47 to go in the period with the Admiral on the five-on-three.Entering the third facing a two-goal deficit, the Rivermen upped the anti offensively. Just 3:18 in, Charles Linglet beat Rinne as Peoria tried to pull even. Despite closing the gap to 3-2, Peoria could not generate a big enough surge to overtake the Admirals in spite of a 6-on-4 advantage for almost 90 seconds at the end of the game.
Vigilante’s second period goal was his second shorthanded tally of the season while Rinne had 25 saves on the night and also chipped in his second assist of the season. O’Reilly’s two assists brought his total to 41, as he notched his eighth multi-point game of the year.
The Admirals are back on the ice to take on the Chicago Wolves Thursday night, February 14th at 7:00 p.m., at the Bradley Center. Fans can purchase tickets by calling the Admirals office at (414) 227-0550, or by logging onto www.ticketmaster.com.
