O'Reilly Guides Admirals to 5-4 Win over Wolves
Feb 1, 2008
Milwaukee, WI – Cal O’Reilly notched the game-winning goal and added two assists to carry the Milwaukee Admirals past the Chicago Wolves 5-4 Friday night at the Bradley Center. Defenseman Cody Franson also added two assists while goaltender Pekka Rinne had 26 saves on the night.
The first 20 minutes of play were dominated by Chicago’s defense, which foiled almost every attempt the Admirals made to get on the board. Milwaukee had a close call when Antti Pihlstrom had a short breakaway, but his shot was blocked by netminder Ondrej Pavelec and the rebound was cleared away. Chicago would strike first, when Jordan LaVallee, chased by Mike Santorelli, scored on a breakaway of his own at 9:42 of the first period.
The Admirals would not exit the frame quietly, however, and fired back at the Wolves with just 0:42 left in the period. Matt Ellison recovered a rebound initially shot by Franson and slapped the puck past Pavelec.
With the score tied, the Admirals entered the second set guns blazing and took the lead after only seven seconds. Josh Langfeld found a loose puck in the crease and tipped it in stick side. Halfway through the period, Milwaukee found themselves down two men, as both Nolan Yonkman and Langfeld sat in the box. The Wolves capitalized on the opportunity and evened up the score at the 8:18 mark when Alexandre Giroux scored.
Not to be outdone, defenseman Janne Niskala fired a slapshot at 11:21 that was deflected over Pavelec giving the Ads the lead once again. With 1:55 left to go in the second, Chicago got revenge again as Bryan Little lit the lamp, notching his first shorthanded goal of the season.
Tonight’s match marked the third time this season that O’Reilly has earned three points in a game, while both Ellison and Langfeld scored their 13th goals of the season, tying Mike Santorelli for second on the team.
The Admirals are on the road tomorrow night, facing off against the Peoria Rivermen at 8:00 pm at the Carver Arena. They return to the Bradley Center next Friday night, February 8th to take on the Manitoba Moose at 7:00 pm. After the game, country star Jason Aldean will perform a free concert for all those in attendance.
