Admirals Barbecue IceHogs

Mar 9, 2008

Milwaukee, WI – Andreas Thuresson notched his second game-winning goal of the season to carry the Milwaukee Admirals past the Rockford IceHogs 3-2 Saturday night at the Bradley Center.

With the playoffs in sight, both teams took the ice fired up to battle for a much needed win. Aggression defined the first period, a style of play becoming characteristic of games played between the Ads and IceHogs. Milwaukee started strong, but Rockford’s defensive unit was on point and foiled many of the Ads’ attempts to get on the board. Matching the Hogs, the Admirals’ defense was solid and was complimented by an offensive unit that forced play into the Rockford zone each time the puck was returned.

It wasn’t until the back end of the frame that goal horn finally sounded as the IceHogs saw two of their own sitting in the box. Peverley, positioned near the side of the goal, grab a rebound and fired a wrister past former Admiral Wade Flaherty to post his fifth power play goal of the season at the 17:43 mark.

Rockford tied the score only 57 seconds into the second as Troy Brouwer tipped in a pass to beat Rinne stickside. The remainder of the second period turned into a campaign between netminders, as Rinne and Flaherty stopped a combined 23 shots to keep the score knotted at one.

The third began similarly to the second, to the dismay of the 10,767 fans in attendance. Just 1:16 in, Rinne was caught too far out of the net as Jerramie Domish tapped in a loose puck around the goal post. Not to be outdone, the Admirals answered back at the 7:38 mark when Jason Guerriero skated through the slot and beat Flaherty glove side to tie the game.

With just under 10 minutes to go in the game, Thuresson positioned himself at the left faceoff circle in the offensive zone. He retrieved a pass and his shot hit the crossbar and fell just behind the goal line to give the Admirals the 3-2 lead. Despite Rockford’s best effort, Milwaukee held on to conquer the IceHogs for the fourth time this season.

With a goal and an assist Peverley’s notched a point for the fifth straight game. The win also edged the Admirals past the Peoria Rivermen in the West Division standings into fourth place.

The Admirals continue their six-game homestand on Tuesday, March 11th at 7:00 pm when the defending Calder Cup Champion Hamilton Bulldogs come to the Bradley Center for the lone appearance of the season.
