Winning Streak Ends at Six
Dec 19, 2008
Grand Rapids forward Francis Lemieux scored a hat trick to lead the Griffins past the Milwaukee Admirals Friday night at Van Andel Arena, 6-3. The loss snapped Milwaukee's six-game winning streak.
The goals were the first three of the season for Lemieux.
Admirals forward Mike Santorelli recorded a goal and assist to extend his streak of games with at least a point to 14, tying the season-high in the AHL this season.
The game started well for Milwaukee as Santorelli scored a power play goal at 1:59 of the first period. Griffins forward Aaron Downey was penalized at 1:50 for a cross-check and the Grand Rapids bench was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for arguing the call. That gave the Admirals a 5-on-3 advantage. Defenseman Cody Franson found Ryan Jones with a pass on the right post. Jones fed Santorelli on the left post for the goal, Santorelli's 10th of the season and sixth on the power play.
It was all Grand Rapids after that. Lemieux got the Griffins on the board after converting a Francis Pare pass at 5:22 of the first. Cory Emmerton's power play goal at 15:01 gave the Griffins the lead for good.
Lemieux scored the next two goals for Grand Rapids. At 3:12 of the second period, he received another Pare pass and converted the 2-on-1 chance. Then, with 1:51 left in the second period, his shot from the left circle gave the Griffins a 4-1 lead.
Former Admirals forward Darren Haydar assisted on Mattias Ritola's goal at 9:14 of the third for the Griffins fifth goal of the game. Milwaukee finally ended the string of five straight goals when Jones scored on a shot from the slot. His seventh goal of the season was assisted by Alex Sulzer and Franson.
With 3:26 to play, Griffins forward Ryan Oulahen went to the penalty box for hooking and the Admirals decided to pull goalie Drew MacIntyre for a 6-on-4 power play. However, Darren Helm was able to put another goal up on the board, a shorthanded tally into the empty net at 17:35 of the third.
Jones scored his second of the game with a shot from the slot at 19:41 to end the scoring. Santorelli and Jed Ortmeyer recorded the helpers.
MacIntyre stopped 33 of 38 shots in the loss. Grand Rapids goalie Daniel Larsson turned aside 31 of 34 shots for the win.
The Admirals play at Grand Rapids Saturday. Milwaukee returns home to the Bradley Center to host Iowa.
