Matheson Helps Admirals Halt Rampage
Dec 29, 2008
Milwaukee, WI—Mark Matheson posted his first career three-point night and Milwaukee had 14 different players find the scoresheet as they defeated the San Antonio Rampage 6-2 Monday night at the Bradley Center. The win was the eighth straight for the Admirals at home.
Patric Hornqvist put the Admirals up 1-0 when he potted his fourth goal of the season at the 17:40 mark of the opening stanza. Kelsey Wilson dove to poke a loose puck over to Hornqvist, who came into the San Antonio zone with Scott Ford on a two-on-one and then fired a wrist shot that beat San Antonio netminder Josh Tordjman high to the stick side.
It would be 2-0 Milwaukee when Ryan Maki jammed in a rebound of a Stephen Werner shot at 3:03 of the second. It was Maki's first goal of the season. Matheson then put the Ads up by three with his second goal in three games at 9:22 of the period.
San Antonio got on the board just eight seconds later as former Admiral Wyatt Smith won a clean face off in the Admirals zone over to defenseman Sean Sullivan, who blasted a slap shot over the shoulder of Milwaukee goalie Drew MacIntyre. However, the Admirals built the lead back up to three at the 12:56 mark of the second on Jed Ortmeyer's fifth tally of the season. Mike Santorelli fed Ortmeyer on the top of the left circle and he fired a one-timer beat Tordjman five-hole.
Admiral forward Ryan Jones kicked off the scoring in the third period when he got a pass from Cody Franson at the top of the left circle, took a couple of strides towards the goal and fired a wrist shot past Al Montoya, who replaced had Tordjman in net. However, the Rampage pulled to within three at 10:10 of the third when Jeff Hogan intercepted a Milwaukee pass directly in front of MacIntyre, deeked to his right, and then shoveled a backhand over the sprawled Admiral backstop.
Jed Ortmeyer ended any thoughts of a San Antonio comeback when he beat his former University of Michigan teammate Montoya to a loose puck in the middle of the Rampage zone and easily scored his second marker of the night. MacIntyre earned a rare assist on the play, as did blueliner Teemu Laakso.
Matheson (1g-2a) paced the Admirals offense, while Franson (2a), Santorelli (2a), and Ortmeyer (2g) each chipped in two points. Franson, Matheson, and Ortmeyer were also all +3. MacIntyre made 26 saves to earn his sixth win in his last seven starts and his 15th victory of the season.
