Admirals Trampled by Rampage
Jan 23, 2009
Milwaukee, WI--The Milwaukee Admirals fell behind the San Antonio Rampage 3-0 after 16 minutes of play and never recovered in a 5-1 loss on Friday night in front of 12,198 fans at the Bradley Center.
The scoring started early, and not in the Admirals favor. Just 3:28 into the game, University of Michigan alumni Kevin Porter fired in a wrister from just inside the blue line while on a power-play for a Jed Ortmeyer hooking infraction. Drew MacIntyre was able to stop the initial shot, but the rebound trickled out to Brett MacLean, who was uncovered. It was an easy tap in for MacLean who scored his 12th goal of the season. Defenseman David Schlemko was also involved in the play for which he earned an assist.
The Admirals bad start quickly got worse, as they received another penalty right after the first goal, and the Rampage were able to capitalize yet again. At 5:19, former Admiral Wyatt Smith was given a perfect centering pass from Alexander Nikulin, who was standing in the corner with the puck, and also plenty of time to choose his pass recipient. Smith snapped a quick shot right through MacIntyre’s legs to put the Rampage up 3-0. Kevin Porter earned his second assist of the night on the play as well.
The first period scoring wasn’t over for San Antonio. On a 5-3 power-play the Rampage were working it easily in the Ads zone, when Brett MacLean scored his second goal in front of the net with a tip in off a pass from, once again, Kevin Porter. It was MacLean’s second goal and Porter’s third assist.
The only action on the scoreboard in the second period came from the stick of Wyatt Smith. With just 1:33 left in the period, Smith and Joel Perrault found themselves on a 2 on 1 while playing shorthanded. It was Perrault who handed it over to Smith who sniped it over MacIntyre’s glove for his second goal of the game.
The third period began with yet another goal by the Rampage at 3:06. It came in the same fashion as the second goal, with an easy one timer to Alexander Nikulin from David Spina.
The Admirals were finally able to get on the board at 18:28 of the third when Hugh Jessiman centered Ryan Maki in front of the Rampage net. Unfortunately, it was too late for a comeback, as the Rampage went home with the win.
Goaltender Josh Tordjman saved 32 of 33 shots, including an Admirals season high 18 shots in the second period. Smith and MacLean each finished with two goals, while Porter and Perrault both tallied three assists on the night.
Milwaukee certainly didn’t lack for opportunities in the game, but they finished 0-for-8 on the power play. The Ads have now converted just one power-play goal in their last 26 chances.
The Admirals play Saturday night in Rockford before taking the next four days off for the AHL All-Star break. The Ads next home game is Friday, January 30th at 7:00 pm versus the Chicago Wolves.
