O'Reilly, Jessiman Lead Admirals Past Peoria
Feb 8, 2009
Milwaukee, WI – Cal O’Reilly and Hugh Jessiman shined for the Admirals with a combined five goals to lead Milwaukee to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Peoria Rivermen Sunday evening at the Bradley Center.
Cal put in his first two goals just 2:30 apart from each other in the first period, and scored his third goal in the second to make the score 3-1. The first goal came shorthanded, as he took it upon himself to deke the defender and rocket his shot over the glove of Peoria netminder Ben Bishop.
His second and third goals were both assisted by defenseman Cody Franson, one coming on a tactical shot short side while on a 5-3 powerplay.
“It was just one of those nights, I got some lucky bounces. That’s the way it goes sometimes,” said O’Reilly. “I missed an empty net last night to tie the game in Chicago, so I was pretty mad at myself. So tonight it was nice to get a couple bounces, especially in a tight game like that when we needed a lot to win.”
The Rivermen pulled within one at 3-2, until Hugh Jessiman scored on a beautiful one-timer play from none other than O’Reilly.
Once again the Rivermen came back to within one goal when Chris Conner got around the Milwaukee defense and made a beautiful move to beat Admirals netminder Mark Dekanich, but, just like earlier in the game, Jessiman would put Milwaukee back up by two. It was on a pass from James Sixsmith that gave Jessiman the opening to blast a slapshot from the top of the circle to put them up 5-3.
Trent Whitfield of Peoria brought it back to within one goal of tying it up with a powerplay goal, but it at the 19:59 mark of the third and thus the game was out of reach.
Goaltender Mark Dekanich stopped 22 of Peoria’s 26 shot in his s, and Ben Bishop stopped 22 of the Admirals 27. O’Reilly picked up a hatrick and added two assists for a five point night, while Jessiman scored two goals. Defenseman Cody Franson also had a two-point evening with two assists.
