Milwaukee Bests Griffins in Matinee
Mar 15, 2009
Cody Franson scored two goals in the final 2:06 and goalie Drew MacIntyre stopped 28 shots as Milwaukee defeated Grand Rapids 2-1 Sunday at Van Andel Arena.
Milwaukee finished the regular season with a 6-2-0-0 record against Grand Rapids. All six wins were by one goal.
MacIntyre’s win was his AHL-best 30th of the season. He steadied the Admirals in the first period as the Griffins outshot Milwaukee 11-3.
The first goal was scored with 2:06 to play in regulation. With Griffins forward Darren McCarty in the penalty box, Cody Franson’s putback gave Milwaukee a 1-0 lead and a rare power play goal against the Griffins on their home ice. Cal O’Reilly’s shot from the left point deflected off Nick Spaling to the right circle where Franson banged it in for his eighth goal of the season, fifth on the power play. It was only the 15th power play goal scored against the Griffins at Van Andel Arena this season.
With the Griffins goalie, Daniel Larsson, pulled for an extra attacker, Franson fired the puck from his own goal line into the Griffins net for a 2-0 lead. Scott Ford notched the lone assist.
With the Griffins goalie still on the bench, Grand Rapids forward Ville Leino scored with just 14.6 seconds to play.
