Mason Garners Honor from Admirals Fans

Aug 31, 2009

Milwaukee, WI– In the most democratically selected promotion in Milwaukee Admirals history, Chris Mason pulled out a surprise victory over Scottie Upshall in a poll to determine which former Admiral now playing in the NHL will get his own bobblehead during the upcoming season.

Out of nearly 1,000 votes cast, Mason, a goaltender who played parts of five seasons with the Admirals, overcame a ten vote deficit over the final two days to finish exactly 20 votes ahead of the second-place Upshall. Overall Mason finished with 34% of the vote, while Upshall garnered 31%. Greg Zanon (14%), Vern Fiddler (13%), and Dan Hamhuis (8%) rounded out the voting. The poll was conducted through the Admirals website at www.milwaukeeadmirals.com.

Upshall was considered the favorite coming into the poll, given he was the most recent of the five to have skated for Milwaukee and was a member of two Admiral teams that made it to the Calder Cup Finals. However, as he has often done throughout his career, Mason hung tight and was able to secure the win despite not having played for the Ads since the 2003-04 campaign.

Mason, who spent ten years in the Nashville organization, played for the St. Louis Blues last year, accumulating a 27-21-7 record with a 2.41 goals against average and a .916 save percentage. His 27 wins were a career high, as were his six shutouts, and he helped the Blues reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2003-04 season. The Red Deer, AB native is second all-time by an Admirals netminder in games played (173), tied for second in career shutouts (10), and fourth in wins (70).

Mason’s bobblehead will be distributed to the first 5,000 fans on Friday, March 5th when the Admirals battle the Lake Erie Monsters. The rest of the promotional schedule will be released at a later date.
