Hoffman Estates, IL--Admirals defenseman Ethan Grahamforced overtime on a goal with just 50 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Ads eventually lost to the Chicago Wolves 3-2 after Chicago's Darryl Smith notched the game-wining goal 2:48 into OT Saturday night at the Hoffman Estates Community Center and Ice Arena.
Smith’s first goal of the preseason came when he gathered a loose puck in the crease and shoveled it past Admirals goalie Chet Pickard.
After a scoreless first period, the Wolves got on the board first at 16:52 of the second period when Kevin Doell scored his third goal of the preseason. Center Johnny Pohl held the puck behind the Milwaukee net and passed it out front to Doell, who wristed a shot past Pickard.
Milwaukee knotted the score at one at 8:06 of the third period when Wolves goaltender Kevin Armstrong mishandled the puck behind the net and it bounced to Admirals center Wacey Rabbit, who scored an easy goal from his knees.
The Wolves regained the lead just 98 seconds later when defenseman Brett Motherwell sprung Sterling on a breakaway. The left wing deked Pickard and slid the puck between the netminder’s legs at 9:44 of the final frame.
The Admirals tied the game, 2-2, with 50 seconds remaining in regulation. With Pickard pulled for the extra attacker, right wing Chris Mueller’s shot was thwarted by Armstong, but the rebound kicked out to Graham, who fired a one-timer past the Wolves goalie.
Armstrong turned aside 17 of 19 shots in 31:16 of action, while goaltender Peter Mannino also kicked out 17 shots for the Wolves.
Pickard posted 19 saves in 30:36 of action after replacing Jeremy Smith at 31:32. Smith thwarted all 15 shots he faced.
