Admirals Fall to Peoria in a Shoot-out
Oct 9, 2009
Peoria, IL—Peter Olvecky notched a goal and an assist and Cal O’Reilly chipped in a pair of assists, but it was not enough as the Milwaukee Admirals fell to the Peoria Rivermen 4-3 in a shootout Friday night in Peoria.
Peoria got on the board first when Lars Eller notched his first goal of the season 4:50 into the first period, but the Admirals responded on Dave Scatchard scored a goal in his first game back with Milwaukee since the 2007-08 season. Robert Dietrich and Mark Santorelli assisted on the power-play goal at 13:23 of the opening stanza.
Jonas Junland put the Rivermen back up by one with a power-play marker at 4:57 of the second. Milwaukee had just finished killing off 55 seconds of a five-on-three power-play when Junland knocked in his third of the year to give Peoria a 2-1 lead heading into the third.
However, the Admirals would leap frog the Rivermen with a pair of goals in the first 3:23 of the third. The first came just 20 seconds into the final frame on Andreas Thuresson’s first of the year, and then the Ads took the lead when Olvecky split two Peoria defenders and beat goaltender Ben Bishop for his first marker as an Admiral.
The Rivermen got the equalizer with just under ten minutes to play in the contest when Julian Talbot stole the puck from behind the Milwaukee net and dished it to Cam Paddock, who beat Milwaukee goalie Mark Dekanich first his first of the season.
The score stayed that way through the rest of regulation and overtime, although Milwaukee had a golden opportunity when Olvecky hit the post on a shot with less than ten seconds remaining in OT.
The first seven shooters between the two teams were denied in the shootout, but Peoria’s Aaron Palushaj and Nicholas Drazenovic converted their attempts that sandwiched a successful try by Milwaukee’s Santorelli to give the Rivermen a 2-1 victory in the shootout and a 4-3 win in the game.
