Familiar Faces Lead Way in Peoria
Oct 14, 2009
Cal O’Reilly notched four assists and Alex Sulzer recorded three helpers to lead the Milwaukee Admirals past the Peoria Rivermen Wednesday at Carver Arena, 5-2.
Milwaukee got on the board first with an extra attacker on the ice due to a delayed penalty against the Rivermen. Peter Olvecky carried the puck to the Peoria blue line, passed left to Andreas Thuresson who zipped a pass through the slot to O’Reilly in the right circle. O’Reilly dropped the puck to the trailing Jonathan Blum who slapped the puck into the net for his first professional goal, and point, at 9:32 of the first period.
Cody Franson made it 2-0 with a power play goal at 14:26 of the first period. With the Admirals on a 4-on-3 power play, O’Reilly sent the puck to Sulzer at the right point. Sulzer passed to Franson for the shot and goal from the top of the left circle.
Milwaukee’s power play unit struck again to make the score 3-0 at 4:17 of the second period. Sulzer and Franson did well to hold the zone on several clearing attempts. Finally, after Franson held and passed to Sulzer at the left point, Sulzer found Dave Scatchard in front of the Peoria crease for a deflection. The goal was the second of the season, and on the power play, for Scatchard in as many games.
Nicholas Drazenovic scored at 7:52 of the second to put the Rivermen on the board, but Milwaukee scored yet another power play goal to make it a 4-1 game at 19:02. Sulzer’s shot from the right point was deflected by Thuresson. The goal was Thuresson’s second of the season. Assists went to Sulzer and O’Reilly, the third assists of the evening for both.
Just 18 seconds later, Peoria’s Derek Armstrong, in his first game with the Rivermen, deflected a Julian Talbot shot into the net to make the score 4-2 after two periods.
Milwaukee’s Ben Eaves added an empty net goal with 1:07 to go. O’Reilly and Olvecky.
Milwaukee outshot Peoria 34-24 in the game. Goalie Mark Dekanich made 22 saves for the win. The Admirals improved to 2-0-0-1 on the season, 24-7-2-3 all-time against the Rivermen in the AHL.
