Late Power Play Sinks Admirals

Nov 14, 2009

Peoria’s Brendan Bell scored a power play goal with 16 seconds to play to lead the Peoria Rivermen to a 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Admirals.

No penalties were whistled in the third period until Milwaukee’s Ryan Jones was called for slashing with 26 seconds left in the game.

The Admirals tried to clear the puck out of the defensive zone. Nolan Yonkman’s attempt bounced off a seam in the glass into the high slot. Rivermen center Lars Eller knocked the puck down then passed to Bell for the slapshot from the right circle.

The game ended Milwaukee’s first stretch of three games in three days. Milwaukee will play five such stretches this year. Last season the Admirals played eight different stretches of three games in three days. In the third game, the Admirals posted a perfect 8-0 record.

Peoria scored just 19 seconds into the game when Barry Tallackson swooped into the offensive zone to the left circle. He put a backhander past Mark Dekanich for his fourth goal of the season.

The Rivermen made it 2-0 with a power play goal at 18:51 when Brett Sonne, standing in front of Dekanich, re-directed a Bell shot into the net.

Cal O’Reilly cut the deficit in half with his third goal of the season with 46 seconds left in the first period. Peoria defenseman Bryce Lampman, standing behind his goalie, tried to pass the puck up the middle of the ice. He put it right on O’Reilly’s stick for a quick shot past Hannu Toivonen.

Peoria took a 3-1 lead with another power play goal at 5:24 of the second period. Yan Stastny, standing on the right post received a backdoor pass from Jonas Junland and buried it for his fifth goal of the year.

The Admirals got within one at 7:16 of the second when Hugh Jessiman sent a pass from behind the Peoria net to the slot. The puck bounced off a Peoria defender into the net. Jessiman’s third goal of the season was assisted by Ben Guite.

Milwaukee tied the game at 10:15 of the second period. With a delayed penalty coming against the Rivermen, O”Reilly jumped onto the ice as an extra attacker. He received a pass near the blue line from Mark Matheson then fed Matheson for a one-timer. The shot deflected off several sticks before finding the back of the net. Matheson was credited with his third goal of the season while O’Reilly and Yonkman notched assists.

The Rivermen reclaimed the lead with 1:56 to play in the second when Chris Porter banged a rebound into the net.

Teemu Laakso’s first goal of the season at 13:56 of the third period tied the game. Laakso received a pass from O’Reilly and one-timed a shot past Toivonen. Peter Olvecky recorded the second assist.

Dekanich stopped 23 shots in the loss.
