Admirals Skate Past Griffins
Dec 12, 2009
Nick Spaling scored his first goal of the season to help lead the Milwaukee Admirals past the Grand Rapids Griffins Saturday at Van Andel Arena, 3-1.
Milwaukee came out flying, outshooting the Griffins in a scoreless first period 15-6. The Admirals outshot Grand Rapids 41-22 for the game.
Spaling's goal, at 5:08 of the second period, was scored on the first power play chance for either team in the game. Cal O'Reilly fed Robert Dietrich for a slapshot from the point. The rebound came to Spaling and he buried it for his first goal of the year.
Less than two minutes later, Wacey Rabbit scored the game-winner. Defenseman Sergei Kolosov was carrying the puck behind the Grand Rapids net but lost possession. The puck bounced into the crease and Rabbit poked it past Griffins goalie Daniel Larsson to make the score 2-0 at 7:03 of the second period. It was Rabbit's second game-winner in as many nights.
Tomas Tatar scored with a shot from the left circle to put the Griffins on the board at 9:53 of the third period. The goal was the result of an odd-man rush for the Griffins.
With just under one minute to play, Larsson was pulled for an extra attacker. With the puck in the Admirals zone, O'Reilly played the puck off the glass to center ice. Andreas Thuresson tracked it down and planted it into the empty net for his fifth goal of the year. The goal was just the second empty-netter for the Admirals this season.
Chet Pickard earned the win by stopping 21 shots.
The Admirals continue the four game road trip at Toronto Monday night. The next home game is Sunday, Dec. 20 against San Antonio.
