Admirals Streak Snapped at Five

Dec 19, 2009

Anthony Stewart’s goal at 4:17 of the third proved to be the game-winner as the Chicago Wolves beat the Milwaukee Admirals 4-2 Saturday at Allstate Arena.

Stewart shot from the bottom of the left circle and it beat Chet Pickard to the opposite post.

The loss snapped Milwaukee’s five-game winning streak.

Chicago scored at 3:18 of the first period when defenseman Noah Welch’s shot from the left point deflected off an Admirals defender in the slot to Jason Krog. Krog, standing at the bottom of the right circle, backhanded the puck into the net for his sixth goal of the season.

Milwaukee tied the game on a fluky goal. Jon Blum, working hard in the left corner, shoved the puck behind the Wolves net to Wacey Rabbit. Rabbit skated to the right corner and tried to feed a pass into the slot. The puck bounced off Chicago defenseman Arturs Kulda into the net. Rabbit’s fifth goal of the season was assisted solely by Blum.

Veteran defenseman Chris Chelios gave Chicago the lead at 10:13 of the second period with a slapper from the top of the right circle that beat Pickard high to the glove side. Chelios had his first shot blocked by Rabbit, but the second beat the Milwaukee goalie for the lead.

Milwaukee tied the game with a slapshot of its own. On the power play for the third time in the game, Cal O’Reilly fired a shot from the blue line that beat Peter Mannino at 19:11 of the second period. O’Reilly’s sixth goal of the season, second on the power play, was assisted by Robert Dietrich.

Johnny Pohl added an empty net, power play goal with 7.1 seconds left to close the scoring.

Pickard stopped 21 of 24 in the loss.
