Milwaukee Slows Rampage in Shootout
Jan 23, 2010
Defenseman Alex Sulzer scored a power play goal in regulation and added a goal in the shootout to help the Milwaukee Admirals defeat the San Antonio Rampage Saturday at the AT&T Center 3-2.
Sulzer tied the game at a goal apiece with his third goal (all on the power play) of the season at 9:08 of the second period. Rampage defenseman turned the puck over to Admirals forward Hugh Jessiman in the right circle. Jessiman turned and passed to Sulzer at the left point. As Jessiman acquired possession, San Antonio goalie Josh Tordjman removed his facemask. As the puck went to Sulzer, Tordjman left the net and the Admirals defenseman fired a slapshot into the empty net. After an argument from the Rampage, the goal stood. In just 13 games with Milwaukee this season, Sulzer has 14 points.
After five combined shots in overtime, the shootout went to an Admirals season-long eight rounds. San Antonio's first shooter, Kyle Turris, scored. Milwaukee's Mark Santorelli tallied, too. The next two shooters for the Rampage failed to score while the Admirals third shooter, Mike Santorelli, gave Milwaukee a 2-1 lead after three rounds. San Antonio's Chad Kolarik scored in the fourth round to knot the score at two.
Milwaukee's Wacey Rabbit, the final scheduled shooter, nearly scored the winner as his shot deflected off the left post then the right post but never in.
Rampage forward Mikkel Boedker scored to lead off the sixth frame. Then Sulzer scored to deadlock the contest again. San Antonio's next two shooters were thwarted. The eighth Milwaukee shooter, Colin Wilson, fired a shot past Tordjman to give the Admirals the win.
The Admirals outshot the Rampage 41-30, 31-19 in the last two periods and overtime.
The Rampage struck first at 2:01 of the opening stanza when defenseman Stu Bickel sent a shot from the point past Admirals goalie Chet Pickard. After Sulzer tied the game in the second, San Antonio's Gavin Morgan converted a Stefan Meyer pass at 3:16 of the third.
Rabbit tied the game for the Admirals with 2:12 to play. Carrying into the San Antonio zone, Rabbit was able to develop a 2-on-1. Rabbit tried to pass to his right, but the pass was deflected by a Rampage defender. Rabbit reclaimed the puck and fired a shot from the left circle past Tordjman for his eighth goal of the season.
Pickard, the Admirals netminder, stopped 28 ahots in regulation and five of eight in the shootout to earn his first pro shootout victory.
