Admirals Get by IceHogs

Dec 10, 2010

Admirals goalie Chet Pickard earned his first AHL win since Feb. 5, 2010 as Milwaukee defeated the Rockford IceHogs in a shootout Friday night, 4-3.

In his first AHL start since Oct. 24, Pickard stopped 29 of 32 IceHogs shots in regulation. He also turned aside five of seven in the shootout.

Milwaukee’s seventh shooter, Roman Josi, scored the game-winner in the shootout. Linus Klasen and Blake Geoffrion also scored in the shootout for the Admirals.

Milwaukee’s Jamie Lundmark camped in front of Rockford’s goalie Hannu Toivonen and slapped in a rebound of a Blake Geoffrion shot into the net with 1:21 to play to knot the score at three and force overtime. Geoffrion and Josi both recorded their second assists of the night on the play. The goal was Lundmark’s fifth of the season.

Rockford’s Mathis Olimb scored the go-ahead goal at 9:14 of the third period. Olimb faked a slapshot at the left circle. When goalie Pickard came out to challenge, Olimb deked right and slid a backhander into the net.

For the second straight game, Milwaukee was penalized twice in the first two minutes. With a 5-on-3 power play, Rockford’s Kyle Beach scored at 1:58 of the first to give the IceHogs an early advantage.

Rockford made it 2-0 after forcing a turnover on the left wing boards in Milwaukee’s zone. Igor Makarov scored on a rebound from a Rob Klinkhammer shot at 11:06 to give Rockford a cushion.

Milwaukee got on the board at 2:44 of the second period. Center Chris Mueller stole the puck behind Rockford’s goal and knocked it to Klasen on the right post. Klasen, straddling the goal line, lifted the shot over the left shoulder of Rockford netminder Toivonen for his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Mueller and Ryan Thang recorded the assists.

The Admirals tied the game on Jon Blum’s second goal of the season, his first on the power play. Blum’s shot from the left point deflected off a defender’s skate past Toivonen. Geoffrion and Josi recorded the assists.
