Cedarberg Gets Shootout Win Over Homestead

Milwaukee, WI—Cedarburg junior forward Olaf Jurenko posted a goal and two assists and then scored the game-winner in the shoot-out as the Bulldogs pulled out a 5-4 win over Mequon Homestead in the first round of the Admirals High School Hockey Showdown, presented by Bradley Corporation Monday afternoon.
Homestead got on the board first with a goal from sophomore forward Adam Connolly at 7:45 of the opening period, but Cedarburg responded with a goal from Matt Wickert at 13:10 and it was 1-1 after one.
The Bulldogs posted a pair goals in the second period to grab a two-goal lead after 40 minutes of play. Freddie West earned the first one of the period for Cedarburg, while Wickert got his second of the game at 9:23.
Homestead pulled within one at 3-2 when Peter Schmitz scored an unassisted power-play goal at the 6:14 mark of the third period and then tied it on another unassisted marker, this one by Jake Roland.
However, Cedarburg retook the lead with 3:47 to play as Jurenko scored from close range on assists to Freddie West and Mike Picciolo. Homestead would not go away and with 1:11 to play Schmitz poured in his second goal of the night to send the game into a shootout.
In the shootout the only goal was tallied by Jurenko, giving Cedarburg the win and advancing them to the second round where they will take on University School on Tuesday afternoon.
