Wildcats Take Out Bulldogs
Dec 28, 2010
In a hard hitting game, the University School Wildcats were able to survive against the Cedarburg Bulldogs with a final score of 3-2, and advance to the championship game of the Admirals High School Hockey Showdown, presented by Bradley Corporation.
The scoring for the semi-final game opened up at 8:49 of the first period as Cedarburg went up 1-0. Senior defensemen Nick Boehnlein found the puck at the USM blue line off of a clearing attempt, and let go a slap shot that eventually found its way into the net for the unassisted goal.
Shortly after that the Wildcats were able to respond and tie up the game at 13:14 of the first period. Junior defensemen Nick Burke was able to gather a pass from senior Aaron Storch at the right circle, where he fired a strong shot over the shoulder of Cedarburg goaltender Tyler Jansen for the goal.
The Bulldogs were able to take a lead over the Wildcats 7:46 into the second period on a great second effort by senior Danny Valoe. Valoe took the puck and flew up the left side of the ice where he deked around two defenders and flipped a shot towards the goal. The first shot was turned away but the second was not as Valoe was able to put the puck in the net for the goal. The goal was assisted by junior forward Olaf Jurenko.
2:13 into the third period USM was able to tie the game again on a rebound goal by senior forward Simon Leahy. After a fury of shots by the Wildcats, a rebound floated across the crease where Leahy was there to slap the puck in the net. The goal was assisted by Storch, his second of the game.
Later on in the third period, USM was able to take their first lead of the game on a goal at 10:40 by senior defensemen Zach Hafeman. From the top of the slot, Hafeman took a pass from junior Corey Roadhouse and fired a wrist shot top self for the game-winning goal.
The Wildcats now advance to the championship game tomorrow at 2:46 at the Bradley Center to face off with the Marquette Hilltoppers, who won their semi-final match 4-1. The Bulldogs will take on the Arrowhead Warhawks tomorrow at 12:06 at the Bradley Center for the third place game.
