Josi Scores Winner in OT
Jan 29, 2011
Roman Josi scored the game-winning goal with a wristshot from the blue line at 2:23 of overtime to give the Admirals a 3-2 win at Rockford Saturday night.
Josi carried the puck from the Milwaukee zone to the IceHogs blue line. He fired a low wrist shot that eluded Rockford goalie Alec Richards’ glove. Josi’s fifth goal of the season was assisted by Teemu Laakso and Ryan Thang.
AHL All-Star goalie Mark Dekanich was fantastic for the Admirals. He stopped 13 shots in the first period as Milwaukee built a 2-0 lead and turned aside 27 of 29 in the game.
Milwaukee’s forecheck led to the first goal of the game at 5:34 of the first period. Thang shot the puck behind the IceHogs net. Defenseman Grant Lewis joined the rush and tracked down the puck behind the goal. His centering pass was slapped into the goal by Blake Geoffrion. The goal was Geoffrion’s eighth of the season.
Just ten seconds later the Admirals had a 2-0 lead. Jon Blum dumped the puck into the offensive zone. Mike Bartlett retrieved it in the right corner and flung the puck toward the net. The puck caromed into the net off goalie Hannu Toivonen for Bartlett’s fourth goal of the season. Toivonen was relieved by Richards at that point.
Rockford got on the board with a power play goal at 9:05 of the second period. Peter LeBlanc’s pass from the left wing boards found Jeff Taffe in the slot for a one-timer that beat Dekanich over his glove.
Rockford’s Rob Klinkhammer was awarded a penalty shot with 38.3 seconds left in the second period but he never got the shot off as he mishandled the puck trying to deke Dekanich.
The IceHogs tied the game with 3:58 to play when Mathis Olimb’s shot from the right circle trickled past Dekanich.
