Mar 26, 2011
Defenseman Brian Connelly scored with 1:58 remaining in overtime to give the Rockford IceHogs a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Saturday at the Rockford MetroCentre.
Milwaukee extended its streak of consecutive games with at least a point on the road to 15. The Admirals haven’t lost in regulation since Jan. 13 at Manitoba.
Admirals goalie Atte Engren made his North American debut and stopped 20 shots in the loss.
Connelly skated into the Admirals zone on the right wing and fired a wrist shot through the legs of Engren.
Rockford started the scoring at 8:10 of the first period. Milwaukee center Mark Van Guilder turned the puck over behind Engren to IceHogs forward Brandon Pirri. Pirri was able to quickly jam the puck under the right leg of Engren for the 1-0 lead.
The Admirals tied the game at 9:23 of the first period with a power play goal from Andreas Thuresson. Roman Josi’s shot from the left point was stopped by IceHogs netminder Hannu Toivonen. The rebound kicked high into the air. Kelsey Wilson knocked it down in the slot and passed the puck to Thuresson for his 11th goal of the season.
Pirri scored his second of the game at 3:47 of the second period to give the IceHogs a 2-1 lead. He skated from the right wing boards into the slot and ripped a wrist shot over the glove of Engren for his 10th goal of the season.
Thuresson notched his second goal of the game at 11:41 of the third period. Wilson’s shot from the slot was stopped by Toivonen but Thuresson slapped in the rebound for his 12th goal of the season. Wilson and Mark Van Guilder recorded assists.
Milwaukee set season highs in shots on goal with 46 and shots in a period with 19 in the third stanza.
