Magnus Hellberg recorded his second straight shutout to lead the Milwaukee Admirals over the Peoria Rivermen 3-0 Sunday in Peoria, IL.
The win put the Admirals into the Calder Cup Playoffs for the 11th straight season.
Hellberg stopped 19 shots to earn his 22nd win of the season and sixth shutout of the season, his second straight after shutting out Chicago 2-0 the night before.
Milwaukee needed video replay to get credit for the first goal of the game at 12:33 of the first period. Mattias Ekholm’s wrist shot from the right circle bounced off Peoria goalie Mike McKenna’s right shoulder and into the air. Soon thereafter, the referee pointed at the net, signaling a goal. However, the red goal light never came on. After looking at the video replay, Ekholm was awarded the power play goal. It was his seventh power play goal of the season and 10th overall. Ryan Ellis and Patrick Cehlin recorded the assists.
The Admirals took a 2-0 lead at 10:34 of the second period on an impressive show of both speed and strength by Daniel Bang. Bang received an outlet pass from Joonas Jarvinen and used his strength to fend off defenseman David Shields with his left shoulder. He skated past the defender and moved from the right to left in front of McKenna before wristing the puck over the goalie’s right leg into the net. It was his ninth goal of the season.
The Admirals grabbed a 3-0 lead at 14:57 of the second period when Zach Budish scored his first professional goal. Ekholm’s shot from the right point was deflected off the right leg of goalie McKenna. Budish dove back to his left and swatted a backhander from between the circles into the net. Ekholm and Mark Van Guilder recorded the assists.
The team finished the season with a 41-28-4-3 record (89 points) good for second in the Midwest Division and eighth in the Western Conference.
