Jan 12, 2014
Milwaukee, WI--The Milwaukee Admirals held off a late come back effort by the Lake Erie Monsters and won 6-5 Sunday afternoon at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Filip Forsberg had two goals and two assists and Taylor Beck posted a goal and an assist to lead the Admirals to their first victory over the Monsters since March 16, 2012, a span of six games.
The Admirals first goal came when they got their second power play opportunity of the game after a high-sticking penalty was called on Karl Stollery at the 11:22 mark of the first period. Taylor Beck got the puck at the right circle and passed it to Charles Roussel at the point. Roussel gave it to Filip Forsberg at the left circle and lined up for a one-timer that trickled by Monster's netminder Calvin Pickard to put the Admirals up 1-0.
The Ads added to their lead with 1:58 left in the first period when Kevin Henderson got the puck behind the net, and made a quick wrap-around that beat Pickard to the post for Henderson's fourth of the season. Anthony Bitetto and Austin Watson were credited with the assist.
The Admirals were not done yet in the first period, as they got another power play opportunity with 1:07 left. Roussel got the puck at the right point and slapped one towards the net. Two Admirals were in the slot and Taylor Beck redirected the puck past Pickard to put the Admirals up 3-0 after the first 20 minutes of play.
The Monsters got on the board with just over 10 minutes to go in the second period. Joey Hishon was able to wrist one top right past the glove of Scott Darling.
Milwaukee reclaimed their three-goal lead with 8:38 left in the second period. While on the penalty kill Simon Moser deflected the puck out of the Ads zone and carried it downthe right lane on a 2-on-1 rush. He had Colton Sissons filling the left lane but decided to put one on net. Pickard made the save originally but let the puck slipped between his legs. The puck was sitting in the crease for a second before Sissons finally hacked it into the net.
Forsberg got his second goal of the night with 4:49 left in the second period to make the score 5-1. Forsberg got the puck in the slot, wound up and sniped one top right. Scott Valentine and Joe Piskula got the assists on the play.
Lake Erie was able to make the game 5-2 with 1:45 left in the second period. The goal came short-handed when Guillaume Desbiens surprised Darling with a wrister.
The Admirals were able to claim a 6-2 lead just 41 seconds into the third period. It was their third power play goal of the game and Filip Forsberg got his fourth point of the night with an assist on the play. Forsberg gave the puck to Taylor Beck at the point, Beck found Miikka Salomaki at the right circle and he ripped a one-timer over Pickard's shoulder for the eventual game-winning goal.
The Monsters were able to make it a three-goal game again one minute after the Salomaki goal. Mikael Tam had the puck in the left corner and was looking to pass. He found Joey Hishon at the right slot for his second goal of the game.
The Monsters cut into the lead again when they got a 5-on-3 power play opportunity with just under 4 minutes to go in the game. Hishon completed his hat trick when he got the puck in the right slot, lifted one up off the pad of Darling and into the net to make the score 6-4.
The game got really interesting after a late third period goal by Matt Hunwick with only 1:20 remaining. Hunwick was at an awkward angle to the left of the net and sniped one past Darling to make it 6-5. This goal would be the last of the game as the Monsters were unable to score after they pulled Pickard with under a minute to go.
The Admirals are away for the next three games as they play in San Antonio on Thursday night and then have back-to-back games against Oklahoma City Saturday and Sunday. The Admirals next home game will be against the Toronto Marlies next Tuesday the 21st of January at 7:00 pm.
