Good-Bye Cleveland

David van der Gulik scored three goals to lead the Lake Erie Monsters to a 6-1 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Saturday night in Cleveland, OH.

Milwaukee has lost six straight to Lake Erie over the last two seasons. The Admirals last win over the Monsters was March 6, 2012.

Like the night before, the Monsters scored the first goal of the game. J.T. Wyman fired a shot from the right corner toward the Admirals net. The puck bounced off Scott Darling’s pads into the slot where Joey Hishon buried the rebound for his fifth goal of the season at 14:30 of the first period.

Milwaukee needed less than a minute to knot the score. The Admirals crashed the net in the offensive zone and Simon Moser was able to put the puck into the net for his sixth goal of the year. Austin Watson and Kevin Henderson recorded the assists.

Lake Erie’s van der Gulik scored a pair of second period goals to give his team a 3-1 lead. The first came at :40 of the second frame. Van der Gulik carried the puck into the Admirals zone on the left wing. He passed to the right circle for Andrew Agozzino, whose shot was stopped by Darling. However, van der Gulik put the rebound into the back of the net.

Van der Gulik scored his second goal of the game at 8:47 of the second period with a power play goal. The initial shot from the point by Mark Olver was blocked by Admirals defenseman Bryan Rodney, but came down to van der Gulik to bury.

Van der Gulik completed the hat trick when he exited the penalty box and received a breakaway pass from Olver. His backhander was lifted high over Darling’s glove at 2:08 of the third period.

Monsters defenseman Karl Stollery scored a power play goal at 7:42 of the third to make it 5-1 for Lake Erie.

With 9: 45 remaining in the game, a scrum broke out behind the Monsters goal. Darling skated to center ice and was met by Lake Erie’s goalie Sami Aittokallio. The two received game misconducts and five minute majors.

Magnus Hellberg replaced Darling and Lake Erie’s Mark Olver scored a power play goal at 13:01 to close the scoring.

The Admirals return home Mon, Jan 6th at 7 pm against Iowa.
