Ads defeat Griffins in a Shoot Out
Milwaukee, WI– The Admirals picked up a 3-2 shoot out victory against the Grand Rapids Griffins at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Sunday. The game winning goal came from Josh Shalla in the ninth round of the shoot out.
While trailing by two goals Victor Bartley and Kevin Henderson both scored in the second period to level the game and it stayed that way until the Ads took down the Griffins 5-4 in the lenthy shoot out win.
It only took 37 seconds of the first period before the game’s opening goal. A quick rush to the net by Grand Rapids left netminder Jeremy Smith sprawling for a loose puck that crept underneath him. However, Smith could not recover the loose puck and Gustav Nyquist snapped in the first marker of the game.
The second period saw both sides creating quality scoring chances through a combined 23 shots in the frame. The Griffins scored a power-play goal three minutes into the period. The goal came when a cross-ice pass attempt by Landon Ferraro deflected off of Patrick Cehlin’s skate. Smith, who was reading the pass attempt, was unable to react in time for the deflection, and the Griffins claimed a two goal advantage.
The Ads came roaring back with a second period power-play goal of their own. Chris Mueller skated from behind the net to set up an easy back door tap in for Victor Bartley. It was Bartley’s second PP goal in as many nights – both from great setup passes by Mueller crashing the side of net.
The offensive pressure for the Ads continued and was rewarded with an equalizing goal from Kevin Henderson. Jonathon Blum’s shot attempt found an opening in Griffins goaltender Petr Mrazek. The puck fell in the crease to Henderson who sat at the side of the cage to score his ninth goal of the season.
The contest remained tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, as well as overtime, and for the second consecutive day at the BMOBC the game was decided in a shoot out. The Ads and Griffins went through nine rounds before Josh Shalla’s wrist shot beat Mrazek to the blocker side for the winner.
The next stop for the Ads will be a road game against the Peoria Rivermen on Friday night at 7:05 pm. From there they will return to the BMOBC on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday they will be playing against the Rockford IceHogs at 7:00 pm. On Sunday they will take on Peoria on home ice at 5:00 pm.
