Admirals Sink Rivermen
Four different Admirals scored to lead Milwaukee to a 4-1 win Sunday afternoon at Peoria. The win, Milwaukee’s fourth straight, gives Milwaukee sole possession of first place in the West Division with 50 points.
Admirals goalie Chet Pickard was 47 seconds away from his second shutout of the season. Pickard stopped 19 shots to earn his ninth victory.
Milwaukee got on the board with some cool play in a scramble situation. Chris Mueller carried the puck into the slot but lost possession. The puck started bouncing around the Rivermen net and Milwaukee was able to get a shot toward goalie Hannu Toivonen. The puck was knocked to the left circle where Reid Cashman made a quick pass to the right circle for Colin Wilson. Wilson then found Mike Santorelli at the bottom of the left circle for the goal, Santorelli’s 11th of the season, with 1:38 left in the first period.
The Admirals took a 2-0 lead on a bang-bang play between Mark Van Guilder and Ryan Maki. Van Guilder was able to get possession of the puck on the right half-wall in the Peoria zone. He flipped a pass into the slot for Maki and Maki was able to swat it into the net while the puck was three inches above the ice. Maki’s second goal of the season, assisted by Van Guilder, was scored at 4:34 of the second period.
Milwaukee stretched the lead to 3-0 with a power play tally just 33 seconds later. Peoria’s Adam Cracknell was sent to the penalty box at 5:00 of the period. On the ensuing faceoff, Hugh Jessiman dropped the puck to the Jon Blum at the right point. Blum fed Robert Dietrich at the left point. Dietrich’s slap shot beat Toivonen high to the right post at 5:07 of the second period. It was Dietrich’s second goal of the season, first on the power play.
The Admirals scored its fourth goal at 10:17 of the third when Mark Santorelli slapped a shot over the right shoulder of Toivonen for his ninth goal of the season. Wilson started the play when he fired a shot off the crossbar. The puck was then sent to Chris Mueller who dropped a pass from the bottom of the right circle to Mark Santorelli in the slot. Mueller and Scott Ford recorded the assists.
Peoria’s Julian Talbot scored a power play goal with 47 seconds left in the game to wreck the shutout.
