Admirals Tame Bulldogs

Hamilton, ON--Goalie Magnus Hellberg stopped 21 shots to lead the Milwaukee Admirals to a 4-1 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Wednesday night.

The win was the 100th career win as the Admirals head coach for Dean Evason. He ranks fifth in Admirals history in wins behind Phil Wittliff (378 wins), Claude Noel (183), Lane Lambert (178) and Al Sims (118).

Hellberg faced his busiest workload in the third period as the Bulldogs sent 11 shots on goal. Hellberg has now allowed two goals or fewer in 13 of his 17 appearances this season.

Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead at 12:34 of the first period. With the Admirals on the power play, defenseman Anthony Bitetto sent a long pass up the middle of the ice to the stick of Triston Grant. Grant sped to the bottom of the right circle in the Hamilton zone and tried to slide a pass to the left post. Instead, the puck bounced off the skate of defenseman Darren Dietz into his own net. The goal is Grant’s fourth of the season and first on the power play. Bitetto and goalie Hellberg recorded the assists.

The Admirals tallied another power play marker at 16:25 when Austin Watson buried a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle for his team-leading 15th goal of the season and second on the power play. Brendan Leipsic earned the primary assist with the pass through the slot. Viktor Arvidsson recorded the secondary helper.

The goal proved to be Watson’s 16th career game-winning goal. It was also his 57th goal as an Admiral, which ties him with Timofei Shishkanov for sixth place on the Admirals AHL goals list.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit in half when Daniel Carr’s shot from the point changed direction past Hellberg at 18:51 of the first period.

Milwaukee reclaimed the two-goal advantage when Zach Budish tapped in his fourth goal of the season at 1:10 of the third period. Rich Clune came up with a turnover and fed a pass toward the front of the net that went off Felix Girard’s stick to Budish for the goal. Girard and Clune notched the assists.

Pontus Aberg scored an empty-netter with 1:04 remaining to close the scoring. It was Aberg’s 14th goal of the season and was assisted by Leipsic and Colton Sissons.

The Admirals continue a three-game road trip with a game at Utica Friday night.

Milwaukee’s returns to the BMO Harris Bradley Center to host Utica Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 7 pm.
