Hometown Boys Shine in Return to Winnipeg
Winnipeg natives Colin Wilson and Chet Pickard were the standouts in their hometown Saturday night to lead the Milwauke Admirals over the Manitoba Moose at the MTS Centre, 6-2.
Wilson set a career-high with a four-point game and Pickard stopped 21 of 23 shots. Milwaukee outscored the Moose in the two-game series 13-4.
The win also put Milwaukee in sole possession of first place in the West Division with 54 points. Texas, which did not play Saturday, is in second place with 52 points but has played one less game.
The Admirals got on the board at 17:18 of the first period when Wilson swatted a rebound past Cory Schneider’s glove for his sixth goal of the season. The Winnipeg native was able to put the rebound of a Mike Santorelli deflection of a Jon Blum shot into the net for his second power play goal.
Just 44 seconds later, Wilson made a pass from the left circle to Robert Dietrich at the right point for a slap shot that eluded goalie Cory Schneider. Dietrich’s third goal of the season was assisted by Wilson and Chris Mueller.
Milwaukee made it 3-0 at 5:10 of the second period. Peter Olvecky led a 2-on-1 on the left wing. As he got to the left circle, his pass to the right bounced off Moose defenseman Taylor Ellington into the net. The unassisted goal was credited to Olvecky, his 11th of the season.
Manitoba finally struck with a power play goal at 13:50 of the second period. Marco Rosa carried the puck into the Admirals zone and fired a wrist shot from the right circle over Pickard’s glove.
The Ads regained the three-goal cushion with 28 seconds left in the second period. Wilson sent a pass from the left point to Olvecky on the right post. Olvecky, with one hand on the stick, shoved the puck under the goalie Schneider to teammate Mueller in the crease where Mueller potted the goal. Mueller’s seventh of the season was assisted by Olvecky and Wilson.
Manitoba’s Sergei Shirokov deflected a Rosa shot through Pickard’s legs at 7:14 of the third to make the score 4-2 in favor of Milwaukee. However, the Admirals got the lead back to three just 11 seconds later. Wilson stripped Evan Oberg of the puck behind Manitoba’s goalie, then found Mueller on the right post for the conversion. The goal was Mueller’s second of the night and eighth of the season.
The scoring was completed with 2:37 to play. Cal O’Reilly carried the puck across the Moose line then made a backhanded pass to Mike Santorelli. He swooped to the net from the left wing and slid the puck into the net under the goalie’s left pad.
