Late Goal Costs Admirals
Rockford, IL--Brandon Mashinter scored the game winning goal with 3:09 to play to lead the Rockford IceHogs to a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Saturday night.
Mashinter converted a 2-on-1 play with Garret Ross by tapping Ross’ pass between the legs of Ads goalie Marek Mazanec at 16:51 of the third period.
Milwaukee has not won on the road since Dec. 29, a 4-0 win at Iowa. The Admirals are 0-4-0-2 on the road in 2014.
Milwaukee forward Vinny Saponari started the scoring with a dazzling goal at 16:59 of the first period. In Rockford’s zone,
Saponari skated with the puck from the left circle to the right. He skated around a diving Rockford defenseman, Viktor Svedberg, then toe-dragged away from defenseman Zach Miskovic. He then spun and slid a backhander into the net for his sixth goal of the season. Colton Sissons recorded the lone assist.
After the first intermission, the teams returned to the ice and were told the ice was unfit to play on. The ice had been painted pink for Rockford’s “Pink in the Rink” night to commemorate the fight against breast cancer. The teams were sent back to their respective locker rooms until the pink coloring had been shaved off the ice. The delay lasted just over an hour.
In the second period, Rockford tied the game at 16:00 with a power play tally. Brandon Pirri’s shot from the right circle was deflected into the net by former Admirals forward Brad Winchester for his 13th goal of the season.
The Admirals and Rockford wrap up the three-game weekend series at the BMO Harris Bradley Center Sunday evening at 5:00 pm.
