Watson Goes Wolf Hunting
Austin Watson’s backhander with 21.1 seconds left in overtime found the back of the net and gave the Milwaukee Admirals a 3-2 win over the Chicago Wolves Saturday in Rosemont, IL.
Filip Forsberg’s pass from the left wing boards was sent toward the right post where Watson knocked it down, spun and banked it into the net off a Wolves defender.
Goalie Hannu Toivonen recorded the win in his first start as an Admiral by stopping 28 shots. It was Toivonen’s first AHL start since Apr. 10, 2011 when, as a member of the Rockford IceHogs, he led the team to a 5-4 overtime win at Chicago.
The win snapped a three-game winless skid for the Ads.
The Admirals scored the first goal of the game at 15:17 of the first period. Austin Watson’s shot from the slot was stopped by Wolves goalie Matt Climie, but Filip Forsberg buried the rebound for his eighth goal of the season. Watson and Taylor Beck recorded the assists.
Just 31 seconds later, the Wolves Shane Harper tapped a loose puck across the goal line to knot the game. Ty Ratties’s slapshot from the left point bounced off the skate of an Admirals defenseman toward the goal line and Harper tapped it across for his seventh goal of the year.
Rattie gave the Wolves a 2-1 lead just 1:20 into the second period. A shot from the left point was deflected high into the air. Rattie, standing in the left circle, swatted the puck out of mid-air into the net for his 19th goal of the season.
Milwaukee tied the game at 6:48 of the second period when Colton Sissons finished a 2-on-1 rush with Vinny Saponari with a shot that went off the crossbar and in. The goal was the 18th of the year for Sissons and was assisted by Saponari and Beck.
The Admirals and Wolves meet again in Chicago Sunday afternoon. The Admirals play at home again on Friday, February 21st at 7:00pm followed by a post-game concert from Cheap Trick.
