Smith Guides Admirals Ship

Milwaukee, WI— The Milwaukee Admirals received 34 saves from goaltender Jeremy Smith in regulation and overtime and then he stopped four of six in the shoot-out to help the Ads shoot down the Houston Aeros 2-1 on Friday night. The win pulled Milwaukee into a first place tie with Houston in the West Division.

After netminder Mark Dekanich was recalled to Nashville, Jeremy Smith stepped up and put in his top performance of the season. Smith was pressured by the Aeros right away, turning away 16 shots in the first period, while the Admirals mustered just three. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net.

After a slow first period, the Admirals quickly reached the scoreboard as center Mark Van Guilder posted his seventh goal of the season just 29 seconds into the second. Scott Ford took control of the Admirals offense at the blueline. Ford passed the puck directly to Roman Josi, where he settled it for a slap shot on top of the near circle that blocked by Aeros netminder Matt Hackett. The Aeros did not control the puck as Van Guilder crashed the net and got his stick on it and lifted it over the Aeros netminder.

Josi pushed his point streak to 11 games with his assist on the goal

The Aeros answered right back with a tying goal from Patrick O’ Sullivan just 35 seconds later. The puck was passed to Jon DiSalvatore behind the net in the Admirals zone, who slid in front of the crease and into the slot to center Cody Almond. Almond snuck a pass by netminder Smith and found O’Sullivan backside for tap in and a 1-1 score.

Neither team could get the golden goal in the third period or overtime as only three shots were taken for both teams in the extra five minutes. The Ads came out in the shoot-out to hot start as Blake Geoffrion capitalized going to his right side, shooting over Hackett’s glove side for the first point, however Houston converted on their second and third shots to take a 2-1 advantage.

The was the score going into the bottom of the fourth round when Smith kept the Admirals alive by turning aside Jon DiSalvatore, before Josi knotted the score at two when he beat Hackett with a wicked wrister. Smith had to stop the fifth shooter Cody Almond to extend into extra attempts as Almond tried to go low on the left side of Smith. Gabriel Bourque was the sixth shooter for the Ads and deked netminder Hackett out of position to make it 3-2 and then Brandon Buck shot Houston’s final attempt wide to give Milwaukee the win.
