Admirals Bitten by Hogs

Goalie Jason LaBarbera stopped 36 shots to lead the Rockford IceHogs to a 4-1 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Saturday night in Rockford, IL.

LaBarbera was particularly busy in the second and third periods as Milwaukee fired 26 shots in the final two frames. Milwaukee outshot Rockford 37-26 in the game.

Former Admirals forward Brad Winchester gave the IceHogs a 1-0 lead at 9:19 of the first. He received a drop pass at the left point as Rockford entered the Admirals zone. Winchester skated to the top of the left circle and fired a slapshot into the net for his 16th goal of the season.

The IceHogs grabbed a two-goal lead when Brandon Pirri fired a one-timer from the right faceoff dot past Admirals goalie Hannu Toivonen for his 10th goal of the season. It was a power play goal assisted by Pierre-Marc Bouchard, who threaded a pass from the left circle through a maze of sticks which found Pirri for the tally at 16:07 of the first period.

Rockford’s Jeremy Morin extended the lead to 3-0 with a shot from the right circle that beat Toivonen with only 31.1 seconds remaining in the second period.

The Admirals switched goaltenders after the second period with Scott Darling replacing Toivonen, who stopped 16 shots.

The IceHogs scored goal number four with a scramble in front of the Admirals net. Mark McNeill slapped his 16th goal of the season into the net at 6:11 of the third.

Milwaukee’s lone goal was scored at 9:13 of the third period while the Admirals were on a power play. Colton Sissons fed a pass to Anthony Bitetto at the right point. Bitetto found Vinny Saponari moving toward the net and hit him with a pass. Skating left to right in front of LaBarbera, Saponari was able to tuck the puck into the cage for his 11th goal of the season. It was his fifth on the power play.

The Admirals complete a three-in-three with a game in Grand Rapids tomorrow afternoon. Milwaukee hosts Grand Rapids Wednesday at 7:00pm.
