Darling Controls the Wild Again
Scott Darling stopped 24 shots to lead the Milwaukee Admirals to a 3-0 win over the Iowa WIld Sunday in Des Moines, IA.
Darling recorded his sixth shutout of the season in just his 25th appearance of the season. He is now tied for the AHL lead in shutouts with Chicago’s Jake Allen. Darling improved his record to 4-0 against the Wild with three shutouts. Darling stopped 112 of 113 shots (99.1%) against Iowa this year.
The win and a shootout loss by Abbotsford against Oklahoma City moves the Admirals into fifth place in the Western Conference with two games remaining for Milwaukee.
It took nearly 34 minutes for either team to score a goal. Admirals defenseman Charles-Olivier Roussel was the one who finally broke the stalemate. As a Milwaukee power play came to an end, Roussel skated the puck out of the Admirals zone across the middle of the Iowa blue line. He fired a wristshot over the left glove of Iowa netminder Joel Martin at 13:44 of the second period. The goal was Roussel’s fourth of the season and was unassisted.
The Admirals grabbed a 2-0 lead at 2:45 of the third period. Vinny Saponari fired a shot after entering the offensive zone. The shot ricocheted off a defender to the left circle for Mathieu Tousignant. Tousignant sent a quick shot into the net for his eighth goal of the season. Saponari and Miikka Salomaki recorded the helpers.
Admirals forward Francis Wathier scored a power play goal at 13:08 of the third period to give Milwaukee a 3-0 lead. It was his fourth goal in 15 games since joining the Admirals. Anthony Bitetto and Saponari recorded the assists.
