BLOG: Aaron's Early Thoughts on Camp

It’s an exciting time of the year. It’s especially exciting this season if you’re a Nashville Predators/Milwaukee Admirals fan.

For the first time ever, there is a different head coach looking at the assembled talent in Nashville’s training camp. Peter Laviolette, we’re told, will bring an offensive game to a team that hasn’t necessarily played that way in the past.

Barry Trotz did a lot with the organization (I mean, A LOT).

But, when you have players in their third or fourth years in the minors, they start to wonder whether or not the organization is cultivating them properly. If they feel they’re getting short-changed, the anxiety and the frustration starts to build up.

It’s hard to change a first, second or third impression. If a player failed in the past to catch the coaches eyes, they want another shot. They don’t want the reputation to hang around.

With a new head coach, guys like Austin Watson, Taylor Beck and Victor Bartley will get the chance to prove, to paraphrase Dennis Green, they are more than they thought they were."

All of the competition in Nashville is a good thing. Athletes will get a chance to make their marks. If they’re not there Oct. 9, they may be soon thereafter.

All of this means the Milwaukee Admirals should be comprised of some talented players.

Some quick notes:

The pick that was used to draft Mikko Vainonen was acquired by Nashville from the then-Phoenix Coyotes for one of the Admirals all-time greats, Cal O’Reilly.

Zach Hamill, playing for Hameenlinna, currently is tied for the Finnish League lead in scoring.

Former Admirals Juuso Puustinen and Joonas Rask are teammates for HIFK Helsinki in the Finnish League.

Other locations for members of last year’s Admirals:

Paul Crowder - Fort Wayne (ECHL)
Scott Darling - Chicago (NHL)
Kirill Gotovets - Rockford (AHL)
Kevin Henderson - Texas (AHL)
Joonas Jarvinen - Sochi (KHL)
Simon Moser - Bern (Swiss-A)
Braden Pimm - Hershey (AHL)
Vinny Saponari - Hartford (AHL)
Hannu Toivonen - Sport Vaasa (Finland)
Mathieu Tousignant - Adirondack (AHL)
Francis Wathier - Toronto (AHL) on a tryout
