Admirals Fall to Heat in Opener
Abbotsford, BC--Greg Nemisz redirected a Corban Knight shot past goalie Magnus Hellberg at 1:58 of overtime to give the Abbotsford Heat a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Friday night in Abbotsford, BC.
The loss was Milwaukee’s first season-opening loss since Oct. 2007 (at Peoria), snapping a streak of five straight winners.
With Admirals forward Taylor Beck in the penalty box for hooking, Knight carried the puck toward the goal from the right circle. He lofted a shot over a sliding Joe Piskula that was deflected into the net by Nemisz.
Hellberg finished with 28 saves in the loss.
After a scoreless first period, Milwaukee finally got on the board with a shorthanded goal in the second period. With Miikka Salomaki in the penalty box, Admirals forward Austin Watson went behind the Heat net with a hard forecheck and forced a turnover. He sent a backhanded pass into the slot where Patrick Cehlin deked and slid the puck past Abbotsford goalie Reto Berra. The goal was Cehlin’s first of the season and first shorthanded goal of his AHL career.
The Heat tied the game with an unfortunate bounce with only five seconds remaining in the second frame. Brett Olson lofted the puck into Milwaukee’s zone. Heat forward Turner Elson chased along with Admirals defenseman Anthony Bitetto. Goalie Hellberg tried to swat the puck away to the corner, but Elson tapped it first and tied the game.
Abbotsford’s Ben Hanowski gave the Heat a 2-1 lead at 13:11 of the third after a turnover in front of Hellberg.
That lead was short-lived, however, as Beck knotted the score at two with his first goal of the season. Defenseman Anthony Bitetto sent a shot to the goal that was blocked by a Heat defender. The puck fell to the ice where Colton Sissons tapped it to Beck at the left post. The assist for Sissons was his first professional point.
Abbotsford finished the game 1-7 on the power play, Milwaukee was 0-5.
The Admirals and Heat play again Saturday.
Milwaukee plays its home opener on Saturday, October 19th at 7:00 pm at the BMO Harris Bradley Center against the Chicago Wolves.
