Admirals Stop Hogs in Rockford
Rockford, IL--Marek Mazanec stopped 29 shots and Joe Pendenza scored his first professional goal to lead the Milwaukee Admirals to a 3-2 win at Rockford over the IceHogs Saturday night.
Mazanec saved his best save for the waning seconds as he blocked away an unabated backhander to the boards. Milwaukee’s goalie improved to 2-0 on the season.
Pendenza’s first goal was scored when Rockford defenseman Adam Clendening overstated the puck behind the Rockford goal. Frederick Gaudreau slapped a pass from behind the net to Pendenza who was camped on the left post. Pendenza lifted the puck high into the net for the tally. The goal was scored at 7:14 of the third period.
The IceHogs opened the scoring late in the first period. After Milwaukee’s Brendan Leipsic shot the puck over the net on a partial breakaway, the Icehogs scooped up the loose puck and carried into the Admirals zone. Matt Carey shot the puck from the left circle. Goalie Marek Mazanec slowed the puck down but it slid past him toward the goal line. Rockford’s Ryan Hartman made sure the puck went across that red line. Hartman’s first goal of the season was scored at 18:33 of the first period and gave the IceHogs a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
It didn’t take long for the Admirals to knot the game. Just 21 seconds into the second period, Mark Van Guilder won a face-off in the right circle to Austin Watson, who was positioned directly behind his center. Watson’s wrist shot beat goalie Michael Leighton inside the left post. It was Watson’s second goal of the season and Van Guilder recorded the lone assist.
That same line gave Milwaukee a 2-1 lead at 5:59 of the second period. With a lot of traffic in front of Leighton, Watson was able to get the puck to the left circle for defenseman Anthony Bitetto. Bitetto’s shot was blocked down, but Van Guilder was there to poke the puck into the net for his first goal of the season. Assists went to Bitetto and Watson.
Rockford tied the game at two apiece when Hartman’s shot from the top of the right circle was able to elude Mazanec at 16:12 of the second period. It was Hartman’s second goal of the game and the season.
The Admirals return to action with a pair of games in Des Moines, IA against the Iowa Wild Oct. 17 and Oct. 18. Milwaukee’s next home game is Sat., Oct. 25 against the Chicago Wolves.
