Des Moines, IA--Pontus Aberg scored a pair of first-period goals to lead the Milwaukee Admirals to a 4-3 win over the Iowa Wild Friday night.
It was Aberg’s first two-goal game.
Milwaukee struck first, on the power play, when Aberg blasted a one-timer from the left circle into the back of the net for his second goal of the season at 5:27 of the first period. Miikka Salomaki passed the puck from the left wing to the right circle for Brendan Leipsic. Leipsic feathered a pass through the slot to the left circle for Aberg’s windup. It was Aberg’s first power play goal of the season.
The Wild tied the game at 14:29 of the first period. After much traffic in front of goalie Marek Mazanec, Wild forward Zack Mitchell was able to put the puck into the cage for his first professional goal.
The Admirals reclaimed the lead with 1:48 to play in the first period. Leipsic carried the puck up the middle of the ice and was finally knocked off the puck as he skated to the top of the crease. The puck slid away to Aberg who found the Iowa goalie out of position and reached with just his left hand on the stick to tuck the puck into the net. Aberg’s second goal of the game was assisted by Leipsic and Joe Piskula.
The Admirals went to the locker room with the lead after one period despite being outshot 14-5.
Iowa’s Jordan Schroeder was whistled for a roughing minor with .3 second remaining in the first, giving Milwaukee a power play to start the second. Just 39 seconds into the period, Colton Sissons, standing in the slot, corralled a puck that took a bad hop from the left corner and fired it into the net for his first goal of the season. Piskula recorded the lone assist.
The Admirals made it 4-1, and chased Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson from the crease, at 1:50 of the second period. Leipsic controlled the puck in the left corner, spun and found Austin Watson crashing to the net. Watson was able to bury the puck. He now has a goal in each of the Admirals first three games of the season. Leipsic recorded his third assist of the night.
Watson became the first Admirals player to score a goal in each of the team’s first three games since Alexander Radulov accomplished the feat in the 2006-07 season.
Iowa cut the deficit with a power play goal when Curt Gogol tapped in a pass from Zack Phillips at 9:45 of the second period, making it 4-2.
The Wild made it 4-3 when Brett Sutter deflected a Danny Syvret shot with 47 seconds remaining in regulation but could get no closer.
Admirals goalie Mazanec stopped 27 shots to earn his third victory of the season. The Wild outshot the Admirals 30-23.
The Admirals and Wild resume competition Saturday in Des Moines, IA. Milwaukee’s next home game is Sat., Oct. 25 against the Chicago Wolves.
